This is the second of the BDR-X routes developed by the Backcountry Discovery Route community. It is designed as a 500 mile loop allowing riders to start at any point and return there. Vehicles can be left at the starting point and be there waiting for you at the end at the end. The route is a spur off the last 2 sections of the MABDR then extends to the west into the Pa Wilds area.
Similar to the MABDR, the Pa Wilds route is primarily made up of gravel and forest roads with similar degree of difficulty as the MA. There are also several “expert” sections along the route if riders would like a bit more of a challenge. The route is made up of 4 sections extending from Wellsboro to St. Mary’s, from St. Mary’s to State College. From State College to New Columbia and then returning to Wellsboro.
We may also add, depending on timing, some added interesting stop overs over the course of the ride including the Elk Country in Benezette, Hyner View and Colton Point State Park overlooks.
$2100 – including one meal, 4 nights of lodging, fee for Cave Tour and guiding

What Bike Should I Ride:
Any Adventure or Dual Sport bike can manage this ride.
What Type of Tires Should I Use:
While even street tires should be able to manage this ride, at least 50:50 type tires such as Heidenau K60 Scouts or MotoZ Tractionator GPS would be more preferable.
How About Gas:
Ideally you should have at least 75-100 mile range. This should be fine for most ADV bikes but smaller bikes may consider carrying extra fuel such as in a Rotopax.
How Difficult is the Terrain:
It can vary with the weather as recent rains can drastically increase the difficulty with mud becoming more of a factor. But generally this is a fairly easy ride with most sections being gravel or hard packed dirt.
What About Carrying Luggage:
I will be carrying tools, as well as tools/air pump for changing flats. I will also have a couple spare tubes. You should plan on bringing an extra tube as well (whatever size will fit your front tire) and any tools that are specific for your bike. Along with this, you will need to carry your clothing and gear on the bike since we will be stopping at different hotels along the way.
Is Camping an Option:
There are options to camp. Let us know if that is something you would like to pursue.

John’s BDR-X tour was a wonderful experience. Accommodations and food stops were great. John and Jim made repair and adjustments needed on the bikes along the way and Marc kept us entertained with his stories and kept the small dual sports tanks full with the “Exxon Valdez”. I did this tour with one of my best friends and we had a blast doing the expert sections with John. John shows his genuine love for adventure riding and care for everyone on the tour. I will definitely be back for another tour.
