Tour Overview

This trip will be our inaugural trip on the Wyoming Backcountry Discovery Route (WYBDR). The route was introduced in 2022 as the 11th BDR offering. The WYBDR begins in the town of Baggs, WY then ascends north and to the east to explore the Sierra Madre and Medicine Bow Mountains. We will then head east from the town of Alcova across the remote Beaver Rim area finishing in the small town of Atlantic City (no, not THAT Atlantic City). We will ride pavement 30 miles to overnight in the town of Lander, returning to AC to continue the route.

The route heads north through the Wind River Mountain Range (after reaching the town of Shoshoni we will overnight in Riverton) then east through the Bighorn Mountains then to the Montana border. We will take 7 riding days to complete the almost 900 miles of this route. We will meet up in Baggs the day before the scheduled first day from Baggs to Centennial, WY.

The WYBDR is considered the most remote of the BDRs and this time away from civilization will be rewarded with some long, expansive views as well as overlooks from mountain peaks reaching 11,000 feet. This is a fairly technical route and will be restricted to those with intermediate to advanced riding abilities and experience. This BDR will also test machine so only capable dual sport and adventure motorcycles should attempt this tour.

Itinerary

The plan is to meet up in Baggs, WY on Friday August 25th, 2023 then leave the following day on the ride. Jim Blais (our tail guide) and myself will likely drive to Casper, WY on the 24th then ride to Baggs on the 25th leaving vehicles in Casper for your return the following week. There is a possibility that we will be able to trail some rider’s bikes out to Casper with us. This would then allow riders to fly into Casper to meet us and pick up their bikes.

Leaving Baggs on Saturday the 26th, we will conclude the day in Centennial. Sunday we head to Elk Mountain, WY then on to Alcova. 148 mile later on Monday we arrive in Atlantic City (overnight in Lander). This is the longest stretch with access to fuel so we will likely be carrying fuel with us. Tuesday sees us arrive in Shoshone (overnight in Riverton) and Wednesday in the town of Ten Sleep. Thursday has us in Burgess Junction and Friday we reach the Montana border early in the day.

From the early arrival at the Montana border those who are returning to Casper will ride south completing the 3 1/2 hour, mostly highway, into Casper.

Wow, a trip for a lifetime. Thanks John and Jim for all the planning, keeping me safe and having a fantastic time. This was my first western BDR and it did not disappoint. John your planning and focus on the details let me enjoy the epic scenery, challenging trail, and just have fun. This is the second tour with John and Jim…. these guys have all the angles covered and made it effortless for me. I think we were very fortunate with the weather. This BDR would be extremely difficult or not doable with rainy wet weather, the roads would be impassable. The weather was just about perfect and I think we dodged a potentially dramatic challenge. So, if you are considering any of the tours with John and company, know that you just need to show up with a positive attitude, looking to have a lot of fun, meet some great people and have a ride of fantastics memories. Leave the details to John and have Jim cover your back cause they will do everything they can to improve your ride skills, challenge you, laugh with you and ensure you have a fun and safe adventure. Well done John and Jim… Thanks for a remarkable adventure…. Curtis Eggers
