This is primarily a road tour and covers the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Isle Royal National Park, Whitefish Point, Michigan, Sault St. Marie locks, Manitoulin Island, Ontario, and Stratford, Ontario. We will meet up in Milwaukee and spend the night in the city after having a welcome dinner. From Milwaukee we will head north to Copper Harbor. We will leave the bikes at Copper Harbor and take the ferry over to Isle Royal. Returning from the park we will ride along the south shore of Lake Superior, past Pictured Rocks and over to Whitefish Point where will will tour the lighthouse and the museum highlighting the last voyage of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
We will next explore the Soo Locks at Sault St. Marie viewing the big freighters (Lakers) moving through the series of locks connecting Lake Superior with Lake Huron. We will then head over the International Bridge into Ontario. We will ride along a portion of the Trans Canada Highway east to the bridge the connects to Manitoulin Island, the largest fresh water island in the world. It has over 100 lakes within its boundaries. We will explore Bridal Veil Falls, beaches and hiking trails. We will take the ferry off the island and land at Tobermory, Ontario.
From Tobermory we will stop over at Stratford and maybe take in a play or two, as Stratford is new for its summer long Shakespeare Festival. We will then cross the border back into Michigan at Sarnia. We will make a beeline east across the state and catch the ferry at Muskegon and sail across Lake Michigan to Milwaukee where we began the tour.
We’ll leave Milwaukee and head north for Copper Harbor. We will arrive there 372 miles later and will spend the night there waiting to catch the ferry for Isle Royal the next morning. We will get to Copper Harbor through some back roads along the eastern part of Wisconsin.
We will catch the morning Ferry to head over to Isle Royal. Once on the island we will take a boat tour and hike exploring this island that does not allow motorized vehicles. We will stay overnight on the island before taking the ferry back to Copper Harbor the next day.
We will have a leisurely morning on the island then catch the 2:45 ferry back to Copper Harbor and spend the evening in Copper Harbor.
We will leave Copper Harbor and follow the Lake Superior shoreline for the town of Munising, MI. After arriving there, we will tour Pictured Rocks which looks out over the lake. We will spend the night in Munising.
From Munising we will ride across the heart of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and head north to Whitefish Point to explore the Whitefish Point Lighthouse and a museum highlighting the wreck of the cargo ship, the Edmund Fitzgerald. Made famous by the song by Gordon Lightfoot. From the point we will head to Sault St. Marie to sail through the “Soo Locks”, alongside the big 1,000 foot lake freighters. We will spend the night in the Soo.
We will ride from Sault Ste. Marie along the north shore and take the bridge over to Manitoulin Island. An Island full of Islands and lakes, Manitoulin is a beautiful and quaint island. We will be spending the evening on the island.
We will spend this day traveling around Manitoulin Island
We will leave Manitoulin and take the ferry over to Tobermory, Ontario. We will then ride from Tobermory south off the peninsula and stop at Stratford. Stratford is the home to a renowned Shakespeare festival. We will catch a show that night and stay overnight in Stratford.
We will leave Stratford in the morning and cross the border into Michigan. We will ride back roads across the lower peninsula and stop in Muskegon, MI where we will spend the night to catch the morning ferry.
We will catch the 10:15 AM Lake Express ferry from Muskegon and get to Milwaukee at around 11:45 AM. This will conclude the tour after we say farewell to each other over lunch.
